Airplanes and Rockets Project Group 2

The task of this project was to create a remote control airplane, a space shuttle mounted to a water bottle rocket, and a single stage model rocket. This project primarily made use of aerospace engineering, and made use of some aspects of chemical engineering.

Aerospace Engineering

The application of engineering that is concerned with the research, design, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft and spacecraft. It is divided into two branches that overlap: aeronautical and astronautical engineering. Aeronautical deals with that within Earth’s atmosphere, and astronautical deals with that outside of Earth’s atmosphere. This field began in the late 19th to early 20th century, with the aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. The average aerospace engineer earns over $92,000 annually.

 

Our Plane

Here Sandy and Mario can be seen gluing the parts of the rocket together. The video that instructed them to make this plane may have seemed fairly self-explanatory, however, our group ran into many issues with proper sanding and sizing of the parts of the plane. Despite this, our group was able to create a plane that successfully flew for a few moments.

 

Our Water Bottle Rocket

Daniel displays the beginning stages of his and Landon’s water bottle rocket. In the test launch, the rocket was so successful that it propelled the glider with so much force that it eventually crashed and broke into the bleachers. In our final launch, they were able to safely dislodge the glider, avoiding a forceful collision with the bleachers.

 

Our Rocket

Here Edwin can be seen caressing the first model of Ryan and Juliette’s rocket. After doing the test launch, Ryan and Juliette both realized that their rocket was much too heavy: their rocket only went up about three feet in the air. So they decided that they had to create an entirely different design that was much lighter than the original. This model was able to fly much higher than the previous one.
